Fluxus: An Avant-Garde Art Movement
Fluxus is an avant-garde art movement that emerged in the early 1960s. The term "Fluxus" comes from the Latin word meaning "to flow" and was coined by George Maciunas, a Lithuanian-American artist and curator who played a key role in the movement. Fluxus artists aimed to blur the boundaries between different art forms and between art and life itself. They emphasized the creative process over the finished product and often incorporated humor, chance, and everyday objects into their works.
Key Characteristics of Fluxus:
Interdisciplinary: Combining elements of visual art, music, performance, and literature.
Process-oriented: Focusing on the act of creation rather than the final artwork.
Ephemeral: Creating works that are temporary and often interactive.
Humor and Playfulness: Using wit and absurdity to challenge traditional art forms.
Anti-commercial: Rejecting the commercial art market and traditional galleries.
Origins and Development: Fluxus emerged in the early 1960s, primarily in Europe, the United States, and Japan. It was influenced by earlier movements such as Dada and Neo-Dada, as well as by artists like John Cage and Marcel Duchamp. Fluxus events, known as "happenings," often involved performances, music, and audience participation. These events were meant to be spontaneous and inclusive, challenging the conventional notion of the artist as a solitary genius. The movement significantly impacted later developments in contemporary art, especially in performance and conceptual art.
At a time when many artists were dissatisfied with the elitist attitude of the art world, Fluxus emerged, inspired by movements like Dada and the Futurists. Although the movement had its origins in New York City, it quickly spread to other parts of the world, including Europe and Japan. Maciunas first publicly coined the term "Fluxus" (meaning 'to flow') in a 'brochure prospectus' that he distributed to the audience at a festival he organized called Après Cage; Kleinen Sommerfest (After Cage; a Small Summer Festival) in Wuppertal, West Germany, on June 9, 1962. In 1962, Maciunas, Higgins, and Knowles traveled to Europe to promote the planned Fluxus publication with concerts of antique musical instruments. With the help of artists like Joseph Beuys and Wolf Vostell, Maciunas eventually organized a series of Fluxfests across Western Europe. These Fluxfests began with 14 concerts between September 1 and 23, 1962, in Wiesbaden, presenting work by musicians such as John Cage, György Ligeti, Krzysztof Penderecki, Terry Riley, and Brion Gysin, alongside performance pieces by Dick Higgins, Alison Knowles, George Brecht, Nam June Paik, Ben Patterson, Robert Filliou, and Emmett Williams, among many others.
Notable Works and Contributions:
Yoko Ono's "Cut Piece": First performed in 1964, this performance art piece involves Ono sitting on stage while the audience is invited to cut pieces of her clothing with scissors. It addresses themes of vulnerability, trust, and the relationship between artist and audience.
George Maciunas' Fluxus Manifesto: Written in 1963, this manifesto outlines the core principles of the Fluxus movement, emphasizing anti-art, anti-commercialism, and the blending of different art forms. The manifesto continues to inspire artists who challenge traditional art institutions.
Joseph Beuys' Social Sculpture: Beuys expanded the concept of art to include social and political activities. His idea of "social sculpture" suggests that everyone can contribute to shaping society through creative actions. This concept continues to influence community-based and participatory art practices.
Mail Art: Initiated by Fluxus artists, mail art involves sending small-scale artworks through the postal system. This form of art democratizes the creative process and challenges the exclusivity of the traditional art world. Mail art continues to be a popular and accessible form of artistic expression.
These works and ideas demonstrate the enduring influence of the Fluxus movement on contemporary art. They continue to inspire artists to experiment, break boundaries, and engage with their audiences in innovative ways.
Contemporary Artists Influenced by Fluxus:
Yoko Ono: An influential figure in contemporary art who continues to create works that challenge traditional art forms and engage the audience in participatory experiences.
Alison Knowles: An original member of the Fluxus movement, Knowles continues to create experimental and interactive art pieces.
Ben Patterson: Another original Fluxus artist, Patterson remains active in the art world, creating new works and participating in exhibitions.
Ben Vautier: A French artist who continues to create provocative and thought-provoking works that challenge societal norms and conventions.
Ken Friedman: Known for his contributions to Fluxus, Friedman continues to create and exhibit works that reflect the movement's principles.
Nam June Paik: Although he passed away in 2006, his legacy lives on through his pioneering work in video art and his influence on many contemporary artists.
The connections to the Fluxus movement in Chicago are diverse and continue to the present day. Some key points are the Fluxus Festival Chicago 1993: This festival took place at the University of Illinois at Chicago and featured a group exhibition of over forty artists whose works exhibit a Fluxus sensibility. The exhibition included installations, objects, books, mail art, film, and video. The Arts Club of Chicago: In 2023, the Arts Club of Chicago celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Fluxus Festival and 60 years of the Fluxus movement. They collaborated with contemporary Fluxus practitioners to interpret historical scores. Wolf Vostell and Concrete Traffic: Fluxus artist Wolf Vostell created the work "Concrete Traffic" (1970), which was installed in Chicago. The University of Chicago and the Smart Museum of Art organized a series of public programs to celebrate Vostell's works and the Fluxus movement.
These events and exhibitions show that the Fluxus movement has left a lasting impact in Chicago and continues to influence contemporary artists and their works. Chris Reeves, Hannah Higgins, and Simon Anderson are well-known figures in the field of art and curation. Hannah Higgins is a renowned art historian and professor at the University of Illinois, Chicago. She has done extensive work on the Fluxus movement and is the daughter of Fluxus artists Alison Knowles and Dick Higgins.
My idea for the year 2025 is to invite artists to engage with Fluxus and submit their works by May 20, 2025. I plan to showcase these creations through installations, exhibitions, and performances at various locations. The special connection between Germany and the USA will also be highlighted. The first presentation of the works is scheduled for August 1, 2025, at the Chicago Danztheatre Ensemble in North Chicago.
So far, we have received works from the following artists, whom I would like to introduce briefly:
